5K Turkey Trot

First off, Happy Thanksgiving! I ran a local 5K turkey trot this morning. I was a little nervous coming off a bad marathon in October, a groin pull, and having had a recent flare up of asthma. I wound up doing great though! I ran 20:15 by my watch, but the official results say 20:19. There were timing chips, but they must not have used them. Arg! Regardless it was a great run. It's been eight years since I've broken into the 20 minute range. Now I'd like to get back into the 19 minute range!

I crossed the first mile at 6:20, and felt awesome. I was holding back a bit because if I go out too fast I could wind up wheezing my way through the last two miles. I felt good the whole run. It's been a long time since I felt strong running a 5K. It was nice.

My parents ran too. My mom's first 5K debut was last year at the same race. This year she ran with my dad and crossed the finish line a whole 4 minutes faster than last year! Go team Mom and Dad!

I hope everyone out there running turkey trots had a great day! Happy Thanksgiving!

Here are some stats:
Overall finish: 31/692
Age Group: 2nd
Pace: 6:31

  1. This is the first time I got to the new blog. The pics are great and I love the quote! Glad we could get together for the 5K yesterday, it was fun.

  2. So jealous you went through at 6:20! I went through around 6:55 in my 5 miler yesterday and was alternatively proud of myself for breaking 7 and terrified that I still had 4 miles to go! I actually ran pretty smart, although the last 50 yards were awful (note to self - do not eat Clif Blocks on subway because you are bored before the race!). I am really looking forward to a winter of speed work and long runs though - maybe the next time I come visit, I can actually keep up with you for a few miles! Congrats to your mom and dad too! Hope you all had a great day!

  3. Thanks for the comment on my blog, I just saw it (obviously have been a little slack on the running scene lately)... You are an awesome runner, that is an amazing time, wow. Someday I would LOVE to do a turkey trot if I can talk my husband out of his anniversary football game to watch the kids. :) Anyway, glad to find another running blog, they're about as addictive as the sport!

  4. Katie,
Running 19;XX will be an easy goal for you. Amazing time!!! For your next marathon, I think you need lots of sloooow long runs (I know, boring) bc you certainly have the speed element! There is such a huge gap between your times on shorter races and the marathon! Without the injury factor you would have rocked Baystate!!! Speedy!
