Winter Running

This was the view from our kitchen window on Sunday. New England is so crazy. The fall has been so temperate that I forgot winter was coming. And boom December comes in with some snow right away! This particular storm was fairly mild. We only had 3 or 4 inches, but it was that wet heavy snow that stuck to everything. I did go running on Sunday. It is hard to run in the snow. The streets were clear, but people drive like lunatics, there aren't many sidewalks where I run, and it's slippery. So there you have it...not my favorite for running. What really irritates me, though, is that once it snows the running stroller isn't safe to use. I did manage a run on Monday with the stroller, but only because most of the snow had melted. Now without the flexibility of the running stroller, my running becomes trickier. Sigh.

If it weren't for the snow (leading to my inability to use the beloved running stroller), I would love running in the winter time. The way I see it, you can always put more clothes on when it's cold out, but there are only so many you can take off when it's hot. But alas, I can't control the weather (shakes fists at the heavens).

So what's a running girl to do? This running girl has asked for a treadmill. I used my sweetest voice and said, "I would really like to get a treadmill and here are my completely logical and sane reasons for needing wanting one...blah blah blah." It might interest you to know that somehow I included less likely to get injured on my list. To which Nick replied nervously (because one must be delicate with a running fanatic), "Ah, really? Because I thought that running less would lead to less injuries." Silly man! "My logic is sound," I replied. "I don't disagree with your logic...it's just that sometimes, you, ah, have control issues when it comes to running." I smiled, "Don't worry about that! I'll make sure to increase my mileage appropriately. And it's all I want for Christmas!" Ultimately, he agreed. So it looks like we'll be adding a treadmill to the basement to go along with the row machine, stationary bike, and weight bench!

Oh, and look at that...it's snowing again. I wonder if I can get that treadmill before Christmas...

You will love having a treadmill!! As much as I hate running on mine I can't imagine how I would make it without it when I have no other choice!! Sounds like you are going to end up with a full home gym!

Ugh. I can't imagine running on a treadmill. Of course I live in California where it is running weather 365 days a year! Sounds like you husband and mine think alike!

I have a treadmill and love it. Of course, I would rather run outside. But those days when it is snowy or rainy or icy, it is really nice to run inside watching TV.

I actually bought mine used off Craigslist. Saved a bundle on a really nice machine. Beware if you go that route: they are super heavy to move.

A treadmill is a must-do on these really cold and snowy days...at least for me, cuz I'm a big baby. It was a balmy -7 degrees today and I just couldn't get outside. The pictures are beautiful, though - if only we could get in miles just by looking at scenery, eh? :)

The shirt I just got with the pocket in back is a Nike Airborne. You can Google it but Nike.com also has it. I'll try to attach link. It's pretty cool...I hope it does the trick. I have a Moving Comfort shirt with the same thing but it zips and was a royal pain when I ran Portland a few weeks ago. I'll let you know how it goes :). Thanks for commenting :).

lol about the "argument" with hubs. some days i think i may take his side ;) but for the most part i'm obviously on yours!

i have a treadmill at home but i find it much easier to get on (and stay on) the one at the gym. not sure why? the point of getting one at home was to not pay for a gym membership... sigh. i definitely don't like risking running on slippery ice/snow. snow is pretty and fun to run in (for the most part) but the danger, eeks! don't need to get hurt.

If I were 4 or 5 inches shorter I could use a treadmill safely in the basement, but unless I cut my feet off, my head will hit the support beams. Wet snowy running is in my future.

I am lucky that Arlington and Lexington deice the bikepath, so I can run there in the winter. Of course, for the long runs it gets boring, but it does work. I for one can;t do treadmills and would much rather run in the snow. But the little tyke changes the situation... Looks like you'll have your own gym! Fun!
